Euronet Worldwide’s digital payments business platform epay has become the latest company to integrate the PayPal QR Code feature into its point-of-sale solution.

By incorporating the solution into its operations, epay extends its portfolio of mobile payment methods for brick-and-mortar retailers, with the intention of offering its retail partners access to a potential customer base of 29.1 million active PayPal customers in Germany and 400 million active worldwide users.

Retails using the epay checkout integration software will be able to add the PayPal QR Code at the point-of-sale- with the aim of reducing the complexity faced when offering different payment methods at this point –  in addition to other current and future payment methods.

Furthermore, by offering its retailer customers the PayPal QR Code feature, epay aims to enable them to respond flexibly to evolving customer demands in payments as these developments occur, as well as access new customer groups.

Stephan Heintz, Director DACH epay, remarked: “We have great faith in the success of QR code and barcode-based payment methods, as they are very convenient and secure for consumers.

“The PayPal partnership is an important step for us. It helps us expand our payment diversity and positions epay as an aggregator and concentrator of all payment types, as well as a provider of value-added services of today and tomorrow for retailers.”

PayPal first made its QR Code product available in May 2020, including in Germany and the UK, at a time when consumer demand for efficient and contactless payment methods was rising due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Retailers can utilise the feature by printing a QR scan and posting it on a checkout counter, enabling customers to scan the code and pay without the need for further interactions.

The payments platform later moved to launch a QR code payment option on IZettle’s point of sale app, partnering with the latter to enhance its offering to small businesses in the UK.

Commenting on the integration of the product by epay, Jörg Kablitz, Managing Director PayPal Germany, Austria and Switzerland, remarked: “We are more than happy to collaborate with epay in Germany enabling merchants to easily expand their point-of-sale solutions with our new PayPal QR Code.

“The expectation of customers to pay the way they prefer has increased – online and in person. Together with epay, we help merchants offering their customers a wider choice of payment options at the point of sale by integrating the contactless PayPal QR Code.”
