ThaiCERT reveals online gambling personal data breach

Thailand Computer Security Coordination Center (ThaiCERT) has issued a warning to online gamblers following a personal data breach concerning “global gambling companies” that hold international operating licenses.

Thai personal information was discovered in foreign database systems which “overlap with gambling websites” and the organisation is now working alongside the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA), a department in the Ministry of Digital for Economy and Society to find solutions.

ThaiCERT inspected the leaked database system and uncovered that the database contained personal data of approximately 41m people – with around 3.3m of those citizens of Thailand.

The personal information exposed from online gambling websites’ systems includes: names, ID card numbers, birth dates, banking details and phone numbers.

ThaiCERT said it has “coordinated with major departments” in response to the breach, including the Bank of Thailand and Thai Banking Sector CERT (TB-CERT) and other agencies to assess the risks and determine the next procedures.

In order to alleviate any possible effects of the breach, ThaiCERT and the ETDA has warned people against scam phone calls, emails, or social media contact.

The country’s central bank suggested those who connected with gambling sites should change their online banking password or cancel their existing debit/credit cards and request replacements.

This is on top of warning anybody who has already provided information to seek contact with their respective bank immediately.
